If the world removed career, ambition, goals from my life, I would choose psychology/philosophy as my major. But because the world isn’t as lenient, I chose to major in Economics and Data Science with a minor in Business because it aligned partly with my passion, job expectation, salary potential and STEM designation subject.

This data story explores the major choices of international students in Sewanee, their motivations behind major and expectations after graduation with their major. Lastly, how confident they are with their major.

For internationals, STEM designated subjects which has high job possibility is the most important factor. Majority of Sewanee international students want to do grad school and become more knowledgable in their particular field of studies before they join workforce.

This data story makes you a doctor on utility usage. Sewanee, your patient, comes to you with symptoms. You ask questions like:

• How many gallon per person did you spend in Cannon hall in the month of march to november?

• Which hall had the minimum kilo watt hour(kwh) per person spent in between September and December?

• Did you see any unusual change in Cleveland hall for therms per person usage?

  

Depending on the answers, you figure out causes and thus eventually leading to accurate solutions.

It is massively important to use energy and our resources efficiently if we want to build a sustainable world. Let’s start from our surroundings.

Just like me(not to my extent), I am pretty sure everyone loves food. However, there are 8 billion people and the earth is only one planet. We are multiplying, eating more which leads to more usage and need for agricultural land.

Question arises: “How are we getting these agricultural lands?”

Simple Answer: Deforestation!

Eventually leading to Global Warming and Climate Change.

This data story focuses on this exact storyline with compact data evidence. This doesn’t mean we should stop eating though (I will die not from hunger but from the realization that I won’t be able to taste all of the different cuisines the world has to offer), it means:

WE SHOULD EAT SUSTAINABLY, STOP WASTAGE AND BE MORE AWARE OF OUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Every country in this world today are trying to become a developed country. Whenever you come across the word ‘developed country’ intuitively you would think tall buildings, massive industries, money flowing left and right. The key proprietor towards this development is actually energy, especially carbon energy. However, this comes with a lot of consequence.

This data story focuses on how carbon energy has gone hand in hand with economic development but how it is not sustainable. The only way to come out of this carbon emission crisis is massive use of renewable energy. Although fossil fuels/carbon energy still dominate today, how long they will dominate and take away humanity’s trace from the world depends on how fast we start implementing renewable, clean energy.
